Areas of Oversight

The Waimea District covers the west side of Kauai, from Polihale Beach to the Maluhia Tree Tunnel in the South, at about the 7 mile marker of Kaumualii Hwy. It incorporates the towns of Kekaha, Waimea, Hanapepe, Eleele, Kalaheo, Lawai, Oma'o, Koloa, Poipu, and everything in between.

These are rural communities primarily supported by agriculture, technology and tourism. Some of these employers are the Gay and Robinson Sugar Company, the U.S. Navy's Pacific Missile Range Facility, Syngenta, Pioneer Seed Company, and a host of hotels and resorts. The district's multi-cultural, friendly population provides a diverse and interesting blend of youth and baby boomers.

Kokee State Park and Waimea Canyon (also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific) are also part of KPD’s Waimea District. The Koloa and Poipu areas, at the south end of the district, are known for their many resorts and hotels, as well as popular tourist attractions like the Spouting Horn in Lawai. The beaches at Poipu are a popular destination for visitors, and locals alike, as well as a breeding ground for the endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal.

Current Projects

The Waimea District will be working with the community through a problem-oriented policing approach known as the "SARA" (scanning, analysis, response, and assessment) model. During the scanning phase, the problems are identified and prioritized. The analysis phase studies the situations and looks at cause and effects. The response may include active involvement from parties other than, or in addition to, the police department. The final phase is assessment. There must be a follow-up on the problems identified to make sure that the response was effective.

The SARA model can be applied to a lot of everyday community problems that have traditionally been shouldered solely by the police. Police working with the community to solve community problems, increases the opportunity for success.
