  Computer Towers, Monitors, and other Electronics Recycling Minimize

The Hawaii Electronic Waste Recycling Act was adopted by the Hawaii State Legislature during its First Special Legislative Session of 2008 and mandates that manufacturers implement recycling programs for desktop and laptop computers, computer monitors, and printers beginning in January 2010, and that the programs include televisions in January 2011. A local business, E Recycling Kauai LLC, is now offering year round recycling pickup for electronics for a fee. E Recycling Kauai is an EPA Certified collector and transporter of hazardous material (lead). For pricing information, call 651-2544 or e-mail at erecyclingkauai@yahoo.com.

Electronics may be recycled using the programs listed here, or disposed at County Refuse Stations. Note that commercially generated TV's and monitors are considered hazardous waste and may not be disposed. See TV Recycling below or call the County Recycling Office for more information at 241-4837.

 

Selected Electronics are Recyclable through Online Mail-In Programs:

 

• Toshiba - Sends a check based on the value of the returned electronics. To recycle through this program you must pack your item and ship using a UPS mailing label that is prepaid by Toshiba. Televisions are not accepted through this program. www.toshiba.eztradein.com/toshiba

 

• Best Buy - Sends a gift card based on the value of the returned electronics. To recycle through this program you must pack your item and ship using a UPS mailing label that is prepaid by Best Buy. Televisions are not accepted through this program. www.bestbuytradein.com

 

• Office Depot - Sends a gift card based on the value of the returned electronics. To recycle through this program you must pack your item and ship using a UPS mailing label that is prepaid by Office Depot. Televisions are not accepted through this program. www.econewonline.com

 

     
  High End Electronics Recycling Minimize

Kauai United Way accepts donations of cell phones at 4374 Kukui Grove Street #201 in the grey office condo across from the movie theater in Lihue. They're open weekdays from 8:30 to 4:30. Call 245-2043 or just stop in. They also have a drop bin at Central Pacific Bank.

 

 

Kalāheo School is now accepting certain high end electronic equipment for recycling. The list of eligible items to be recycled includes:

 

·         Cell phones
·         Ink Jet Cartridges
·         Laptop Computers- if working, please include the battery and power cord. Hard drives aren’t necessary.
·         Digital Cameras
·         Digital Video Cameras
·         MP3 Players including IPOD, Microsoft Zone, Scandisk Sansa, and Creative Zen
·         Handheld Sony PSP
·         Nintendo DS

  Television Recycling Minimize

Televisions from institutional sources are not accepted at the landfill due to an EPA determination that the components of the monitors (CRTs [Cathode Ray Tubes] and LCDs [Liquid Crystal Displays]) exhibit characteristics of hazardous waste (lead, mercury) that exceed RCRA limits for Subtitle “D” landfills.

 

 

E Recycling Kauai LLC is now offering year round Electronic Recycling to residents and businesses.  E Recycling Kauai is an EPA Certified collector and transporter of hazardous material (lead).  E Recycling Kauai LLC offers door to door pick up for a fee. For more information, see their website at: erecyclingkauai.com, or call 651-2544.

Please call for prices. Initial discussions with the recyclers indicated that these companies will accept items palletized and shipped to Young Brothers for approx. $.75 - $1.20 per pound, or will pick up items on Kauai for an additional fee. Commercially generated computer CPU’s and other electronic wastes are still accepted at the landfill at this time, or you may ask the agencies above if they accept these items, and at what cost.
