Household Hazardous Waste is any waste material that, when improperly handled, can cause substantial harm to not only human health and safety, but to the environment as well. These kinds of wastes can take the form of solids, liquids, sludge, or contained gases.
The County of Kaua'i sponsors annual collections at various locations for proper disposal of Household Hazardous Waste. Please call 241-6891 if you would like to be contacted when the event days are scheduled. The collections are for residents only; commercial and institutional waste is not accepted.
The materials listed below are accepted at the County Household Hazardous Waste Collections. Please do not bring latex paint because it is not classified as a hazardous waste. To dispose of latex paint properly:
1. Use it all or donate if possible!
- Add an addtional coat; paint old surfaces inside a shed, closet, or garage; or paint onto old cardboard. EMPTY metal paint cans may be recycled at Puhi Metals Recycling Facility (632-0697) or thrown in regular trash.
- Donate it. Ask friends and neighbors if they need paint. Paint in good condition and more than half full may go to Habitat for Humanity, but call first: 335-6105.
2. Harden or dry out in a well ventilated area and throw in your regular trash:
- If you don't have much paint left, solifidy it in the can. Place shredded newspaper, old towels, kitty litter, paint hardener, etc. in the can to absorb. When the paint is dried, replace lid, place in garbage bag, and throw in trash.

| If a spill occurs, your first concern is your safety. If you have been exposed to toxic aterials, call the Hawaii Poison Control Center at 1-800-362-3585. For medical emergencies or large spills, call the Fire Department or 911. Read the product label for exposure and spill information. Keep area well ventilated. Keep children and pets away. |
Do not flush household hazardous waste down the drain… Sewage treatment plants cannot process them all and septic tanks and cesspools can be damaged by them. Also, because storm drains flow directly to the ocean, the hazardous material will eventually get into the groundwater and pollute the sea.
