Hawai'i Electronic Waste and Television Recycling Law

The Hawai'i Waste and Television Recycling and Recovery Act requires manufacturers to provide recycling programs for specified items.  Manufacturers are now required to offer recycling programs for desktop and laptop computers, printers, and computer monitors, as well as televisions generated by businesses and residents.

For a complete list of manufacturer recycling programs log onto the State Department of Health website at: www.hawaii.gov/ewaste and click on the Manufacturer Recycling Plans link.  You may also call the County Recycling Office at 241-4837, or the State toll free at 274-3141 x4226, for information.  Most manufacturer recycling programs are mail back programs requiring you to log onto a website for instructions, and some offer the download of free shipping labels.

Monitors and televisions generated from businesses are NOT accepted at the landfill due to EPA determination that components of the monitors (CRT's- Cathode Ray Tubes, and LCD's-Liquid Crystal Displays) exhibit characteristics of hazardous wastes (lead, mercury) that exceed RCRA limits for Subtitle "D" Landfills.  Call 241-4837 or 241-4841 for information on recycling TVs & monitors generated from businesses and to be put on a contact list to be notified when the next FREE Electronics Recycling Event will take place.
