Reverse Vending Machines (RVM’s) automate beverage container recycling by accepting containers directly from the consumer, into a unit that looks like a soda machine. RVM’s are easy and fun to use: you place the container in the designated slots labeled glass, plastic and aluminum and receive a redeemable voucher from the machine. Vouchers are issued for the cash value of the containers, and are redeemable for cash, or for the purchase of an item from a designated retailer. On Kaua‘i, all RVM’s are owned by Kaua‘i Community Recycling Services (KCRS). Vouchers can be redeemed for cash at any of their Redemption Centers. Vouchers are also redeemable for store credit at Papayas in Hanalei.
Preparation of HI-5 items prior to using RVM: Remove caps and empty containers of any liquid, food or trash. Each container must have a HI5 label. If labels have fallen off, containers will not be accepted. Laser scanners need to be able to read the bar codes, so crushing containers is not recommended.
