  Puhi Metals Recycling Facility Minimize

The Puhi Metals Recycling Center is operated by Resource Recovery Solutions. The mission of the Puhi Metals Recycling Center is to accept  and recycle abandoned, untaxed, derelict and junked motor vehicles, white goods, scrap metal, and other smaller motorized goods such as scooters, lawnmowers, and motorcycles from the County, the general public and commercial entities.

The services provided by the Puhi Metals Recycling Center are free of charge to residential users. Commercial users should call for rates.

Goods Accepted at Puhi Metals Recycling Facility:

  • Abandoned, untaxed, derelict and junked motor vehicles
  • White goods (Appliances)
  • Scrap metal
  • De-pressurized propane tanks*
  • Other smaller motorized goods (scooters, lawnmowers, and motorcycles)

White goods must be segregated into two categories: Type 1 - containing no refrigerant (i.e. water heaters, clothes washers and dryers, stoves and ranges), and Type 2 - containing refrigerant (i.e. refrigerators, freezers or air conditioners).

 

     
  Metal Recycling at the Transfer Station and Landfill Minimize

 

Residentially generated appliances and scrap metal are accepted for recycling at all County waste facilities except the Līhuʻe Transfer Station, where only scrap metal is accepted. Examples of acceptable appliances include stoves, washers, dryers, microwaves, and items containing Freon, such as refrigerators, and air conditioning units. Examples of acceptable scrap metal includes barbeques, shelving, and water heaters.

 

     
  Propane Tank Recycling Minimize

 

Propane tanks with VALVES INTACT ONLY are accepted from residents free of charge at the Hanalei Transfer Station, Kapaa Transfer Station, Lihue Transfer Station, and Hanapepe Transfer Station. All tanks without valves should be taken to Puhi Metals Recycling Facility.  Tanks smaller than 5 gallons are not accepted and may be disposed in the regular trash. Tanks larger than 20 gallons (40 pounds) are not accepted.  Home Depot offers a discount on a new tank if you bring your old tank in for recycling. Call for details at 632-2740.

 

Commercial haulers are required to dispose of depressurized tanks at the Puhi Metals Recycling Facility. Propane Tanks of all sizes are accepted at the Puhi Metals Facility if, and only if, the valve has been removed so that it can be visually determined that there are absolutely no fluids contained within the cylinder. Please refer to the Yellow Pages under the heading "Gas-Liquefied Petroleum Bottled and Bulk Retail," for companies that can perform the service of depressurizing propane tanks.
