DROP OFF YOUR OLD ATHLETIC SHOES TO

BE RECYCLED!

The County of Kaua'i is pleased to continue its participation in the RECYCLE-A-SHOE program where worn-out athletic shoes are given a new life through recycling. "I encourage everyone who has old athletic shoes to take part in this worthwhile program," said Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. "Instead of your old shoes ending up in the landfill, why not recycle them so they can be used to make new products." Residents are encouraged to drop off their old athletic shoes for recycling at various locations throughout Kaua'i.

All brands of athletic shoes are accepted. No dress shoes, slippers, or shoes containing metal (such as cleats and steel-toed shoes). Shoes cannot be wet or damp. Athletic shoes will be accepted for recycling at the following locations:

  • Work It Out Sports Store in Kapa'a is offering $10.00 off any pair of running shoes when you turn in your old athletic shoes to be recycled! Call 822-2292 for more information.
  • The Kaua'i Resource Center on Ahukini Rd. near the Lihue Airport
  • Moikeha and Piikoi County Buildings
  • Famous Footwear in Kukui Grove Shopping Center

All shoes that are collected will be sent to Nike's Recycling Facility in Oregon, where a "slice and grind" technique will be employed to split the shoes into three types of Nike Grind materials. Rubber from the outsole are used in track surfaces, interlocking gym flooring tiles and trim items such as buttons and zipper pulls.  Foam from the midsole is used as a cushion for outdoor basketball and tennis courts, volleyball courts and equestrian surfacing products. If you have any questions or need more information, please call the County Recycling Office at 241-4841 for more information.
