Updated county drug response plan now available online - LĪHU‘E – Designed to serve as a guide for agencies who work with youth and adults especially those struggling with substance abuse, the Kaua‘i Community Drug Response Plan was recently updated and is now available on the county’s website, www.kauai.gov/antidrug. The organizations who participated in the creation of the Kaua‘i Community Drug Response Plan 2008-2013 include: County of Kaua‘i; Drug Action Team; Drug Prevention Coalition and three regional sub-committees, West/ Central/East, Treatment/Community Integration and the Enforcement committees. The plan was prepared by Kaua‘i Planning and Action Alliance. “I encourage everyone that provides services to our children, youth, and adults to take a look at the latest Drug Response Plan. The plan builds upon past accomplishments and focuses on the unique challenges faced in the different regions of our island – west, central and east,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. “I believe we must remain vigilant and continue to collaborate our efforts to combat substance abuse.”

Organizations invited to participate in eastside family summit - KAPA‘A – Organizations who offer family-strengthening programs are encouraged to sign up for an information booth at the Sixth annual East Kaua‘i Family Summit: Celebrating Kaua‘i’s Families. The event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7 in the Kapa‘a High School courtyard from 1 to 5 pm. “This is a great opportunity for organizations to let the community know what kind of services they offer,” said Bridget Arume, Parent Community Network Coordinator, Department of Education, and member of the organizing committee. “The family summit is a fun and informative annual event. We’ve had great turnouts in the past.” Participating organizations will be provided with a tent, table, electricity, Internet access if needed, as well as lunch.

KPD is asking for help with finding missing teen - LĪHU‘E – The Kaua‘i Police Department is asking for the public’s help with finding a teen runaway. According to police, 16-year-old Gabrielle Link was reported missing on Jan. 4. She is believed to be in the Līhu‘e area. Link is five feet tall and weighs about 140 pounds. She has brown eyes and brown hair. Link has a tattoo of a heart on her right thumb. She is of Hawaiian descent and has a medium complexion and a medium build.

Man arrested for cruelty to animals - PUHI – A 26-year-old Puhi man was arrested and charged yesterday with second degree cruelty to animals. He was released yesterday without bail. A preliminary hearing has been set for Feb. 18. According to a police, Michael Wong was reportedly driving a Toyota sedan on Ono St. in Puhi at around 2:30 pm yesterday when he crossed the double solid yellow lines and struck an orange cat that was sitting on the road near the shoulder on the opposite side. Wong then got out of his car, picked up the cat, placed the cat in a bucket and tossed the bucket in a rubbish can at his Ono St. residence. A witness called police to report the incident and police responded.

Wailua fire confined to one bedroom - WAILUA – A neighbor’s quick action resulted in a Wailua Houselots fire being confined to one bedroom. No one was injured in the fire. At around 7:21 this evening, a woman who lives behind the six-bedroom home located at 295 Lanakila Rd. first noticed smoke coming from one of the bedrooms, and then saw flames. She called 911 and ran over to the burning home to notify the residents, who were having a party in their garage and were unaware of the fire. The owners used a garden hose to fight the fire. It was nearly out when firefighters arrived.

Body found at bottom of Wailua Falls - WAILUA – A visitor discovered the body of a Caucasian man at the bottom of Wailua Falls yesterday afternoon and contacted authorities. Kaua‘i police, Rescue 3, Engine 3 and Air 1 responded to the call. The man was placed in a litter and airlifted out. His name is not being released until a positive identification by next of kin is made.
