Theresa Koki earns prevention specialist certification

LĪHU‘E – Kaua'i County Anti-Drug Coordinator Theresa Koki recently became the island’s first certified prevention specialist (CPS). Koki and 38 other professionals received their CPS certificates last month from the state Department of Health (DOH), Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division, becoming the first group of certified prevention specialists in the state since the program was established in July 2011.

Two arrested, two remain at-large after gas station robbery

KŌLOA – Two men were arrested today in connection with a robbery that occurred at the Kōloa Chevron gas station early this morning.
Clarence Kane, age 21, of Kōloa and 18-year-old Kalai Vicente of Kapa‘a, were arrested this morning for first degree robbery. They are currently being held at Police Cellblock in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Pedestrian dies in morning traffic collision

HANAMĀ'ULU – A 69-year-old man died after a traffic collision this morning in Hanamā'ulu.
The pedestrian was crossing Kūhi‘ō Hwy. near the Laukona St. junction at about 5:45 a.m., when he was struck by a white Toyota pickup truck heading north.
He was transported to Wilcox Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Green waste not accepted at Kapa‘a transfer station

KAPA‘A – Green waste is not being accepted at the Kapa‘a Refuse Transfer Station until further notice due to safety concerns caused by muddy conditions in the drop-off area.

Scheduled closures for Kapa‘a, Waimea swimming pools

KAPA‘A – The Kapa‘a and Waimea swimming pools will be closed on Thursday, Dec. 15 to allow the lifeguards to participate in an island-wide CPR/first aid training. The Kapa‘a swimming pool will also be closed for two Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation (KIF) swim meets on Dec. 17 and Jan. 7. In addition, the Waimea pool will be closed for a KIF meet on Jan. 21.

Police searching for missing California man

LĪHU'E – The Kaua'i Police Department is asking for the public’s help in locating a missing California man.
Scott Michael Cullinane, age 41, was last seen at his California residence in April of this year. Cullinane reportedly flew to Kaua'i and has not made contact with his family since. His family reported him missing last month.

Changes in tax relief programs in effect; new deadline for tax appeals

LĪHU‘E – County officials announced that changes in two of the county’s real property tax relief programs – the Circuit Breaker and Home Exemption programs – are now in effect. Additionally, the 2012 Notice of Assessment will be mailed out on or before Feb. 15, one month earlier than in previous years, and the deadline for filing tax appeals has also moved forward by a month going from April 9 to March 10. However, because the tax appeals deadline for next year falls on a Saturday, appeals must be postmarked or hand delivered no later than March 12, 2012 to be valid.
