  Hanalei Bridge Status Minimize
Hanalei BridgeHow the Bridge-Closing Decision is Made
The Hanalei Police Substation Officer on Duty makes the decision to close/open the bridge on the basis of the “Gage Height” reading shown on the USGS Monitoring Station at the Hanalei Bridge. If the gage height reaches 6.0 feet on the meter, the bridge is closed. The bridge is reopened when the gage height falls below 6.0 feet.

Steps to Take for Forecasting Bridge Closure
  1. Visit the USGS Hanalei River gage page. Take note of the gage feet height.
  2. Visit the Pacific Disaster Center's Tides page. Select the “Kauai Island, Hanalei Bay“ option and submit to view the current tide chart.
If the Gage Height is in the 6-foot range and rising, and High Tide is in the next 2-4 hours, depending on your best guess about the amount of rain up in the mountains, the bridge may be closed or may be closing soon.
