  Puhi Metals Recycling Facility Minimize

The Puhi Metals Recycling Facility is operated by Resource Recovery Solutions. The mission of the Puhi Metals Recycling Facility is to accept and recycle abandoned, untaxed, derelict and junked motor vehicles, white goods, scrap metal, and other smaller motorized goods such as scooters, lawnmowers, and motorcycles from the County, the general public and commercial entities.

Services provided by the Puhi Metals Recycling Facility are FREE to residential users.

Commercial recycling is also free, except for a $20 per unit charge for refrigerant containing appliances.

Goods Accepted at Puhi Metals Recycling Facility:

  • Abandoned, untaxed, derelict and junked motor vehicles (with Junking Affidavit from Department of Motor Vehicles) 
  • White goods (Appliances)
  • Scrap metal
  • Lead-acid Auto/Vehicle batteries
  • Tires
  • De-pressurized propane tanks*
  • Other smaller motorized goods (scooters, lawnmowers, and motorcycles)

        *Valves must be removed.


White goods must be segregated into two categories: Type 1 - containing no refrigerant (i.e. water heaters, clothes washers and dryers, stoves and ranges), and


Type 2 - containing refrigerant/freon (i.e. refrigerators, freezers or air conditioners).


  Non-Ferrous Scrap Metal Redemption Minimize

Open Tues. – Sat. 9:00 am to 5:00 pm; closed for lunch 12 pm – 1:30 pm. Located at corner of Wilcox & Kanoa St. in Nāwiliwili Harbor in Līhu'e. Accepts scrap aluminum, copper, and stainless steel and pays out at market value. Redemption of scrap metal requires affidavit of ownership.

Open Mon. – Fri. 8:00 am to 4:00 pm; 1780 Haleukana St. in Puhi. Accepts aluminum, copper, brass, stainless steel scrap and auto-parts include radiators, transmissions, alternators, air con radiators (no oil) and pays out at market value. Redemption of brass requires notary.
  Residents Recycle Scrap Metal & Appliances for FREE Minimize


Scrap Metal and Appliances (White Goods) are accepted for recycling at the Transfer Stations and Landfill.  Līhuʻe Transfer Station, scrap metal only.

Examples of acceptable appliances (White Goods) include stoves, washers, dryers, microwaves.  Refrigerators and air conditioning units (containing Freon).  Examples of acceptable scrap metals includes barbeques, shelving, and water heaters.


  Propane Tank Recycling Minimize

RESIDENTS: Propane tanks with VALVES INTACT ONLY are accepted from residents free of charge at the Hanalei, Kapaa, Lihue, and Hanapepe Refuse Transfer Stations. Tanks smaller than 5 gallons are not accepted and may be disposed in the regular trash. Tanks larger than 20 gallons (40 pounds) are not accepted at the the Refuse Transfer Stations.  The Puhi Metals Recycling Facility (245-6919) will accept tanks exceeding 20 gallons. There is a fee to remove valves. Note - do not attempt to remove valves yourself. Valve removal should be conducted by trained professionals only.  Residentially generated tanks without valves should be taken to the Puhi Metals Recycling Facility. 


BUSINESSES: Commercial haulers are required to dispose of depressurized tanks at the Puhi Metals Recycling Facility. Propane Tanks of all sizes are accepted free of charge at the Puhi Metals Facility if  the valve has been removed so that it can be visually determined that there are absolutely no fluids contained within the cylinder. Note - do not attempt to remove valves yourself. Valve removal should be conducted by trained professionals only. Puhi Metals will accept tanks with valves for a fee.  


Gaspro (245-6766) accepts old tanks for recycling if you purchase a new tank from them.  Home Depot (632-2740)offers a discount on a new tank if you bring your old tank in for recycling. Call for details.
