Transient Vacation Rental Application Owners of single-family transient vacation rentals must register their TVRs or apply for a Non-Conforming Use Certificate. Applications for single family TVR’s must be submitted with As Built Plans (Plot Plan, Floor Plan, Section and Elevation) signed and stamped by an architect or engineer licensed in the state of Hawaii, accurately reflecting the property as it is today and showing registration and contact sign location.

7/24/2008 - KPD to step up sobriety checkpoints - LĪHU‘E – Kaua‘i Police Department officials announced today plans to step up sobriety checkpoints as well as enforcement of speeding violations. According to Lt. Mark Scribner, the police department will be increasing the number of checkpoints around the island this year as part of the 52/12 statewide campaign, and will be checking for those who are driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, along with other traffic violations. “Last year, there were nine traffic fatalities on Kaua‘i, in which four were alcohol related,” said Scribner. “This year we’ve already had eight traffic deaths; we need to greatly reduce these statistics.” Scribner hopes that the checkpoints will help keep drunk drivers and those high on drugs off the streets. “We want to make our roads as safe as possible for the community,” he said.
7/24/2008 - KPD is asking for help with finding missing teen - LĪHU‘E – The Kaua‘i Police Department is asking for the public’s help with finding a teen runaway. According to police, 15-year-old Kelsey Alao was reported missing on July 11. Alao is five feet one inch tall and weighs about 98 pounds. She has brown eyes and brown hair. Alao is of Hawaiian descent and has a tan complexion and a thin build.
7/24/2008 - Road closures – Kōloa Plantation Days Parade - KŌLOA – The Kōloa Plantation Days 2008 Parade will be held this Saturday in Old Kōloa Town, starting at 10 am. This year’s theme is “Getting Together, Plantation Style.” The parade will begin at Kōloa School, head down Po‘ipū Rd., turn right on Kōloa Rd. then left on Maluhia Rd., ending at Anne Knudsen Park. To accommodate the parade, the Kaua‘i Police Department will close the following roadways:
Po‘ipū Rd. from the roundabout to Waikomo Rd. at 9 am. All southbound traffic on Po‘ipū Rd. will be re-directed to Waikomo Rd., while traffic on Pa‘ana‘u Rd. will be diverted north on Po‘ipū Rd.
Kōloa Rd. between Po‘ipū and Weliweli roads will be closed at 9:30 am.
Maluhia Rd. from the Kōloa bypass to Kōloa Rd. will be closed from 9:30 am to noon.
All roads except for Maluhia will be re-opened as pedestrian traffic allows.
7/23/2008 - Traffic Advisory – 3:40 pm - KŌLOA – Motorists heading to the south shore this afternoon are advised to take Omao or Kōloa road to get to their destination. The contractor working on resurfacing Maluhia Rd. experienced equipment failure earlier today and will need to work into the night to finish phase one of the project. One lane of traffic is open on Maluhia Rd. with flagmen on duty for traffic control.
7/23/2008 - Fireworks probable cause of brushfire - HANAMĀ'ULU – Approximately two acres burned in a brushfire in Hanamā'ulu this afternoon. Witnesses told officials they heard fireworks go off in the area just before the fire ignited and saw children running away from the scene. Fireworks were also found in the fields, leading officials to believe that fireworks caused the fire. The fire broke out between King Kaumuali‘i Elementary School and Kapule Highway at around 2:56 pm.
7/22/2008 - Water outage and low water pressure in Anahola - ANAHOLA -- The Department of Water has scheduled waterline improvement work in Anahola from 8 pm, July 29 through 6 am, July 30. While the work is being done, residents on Kīnohi Rd. from Makaī‘ō to Konona roads will experience a water outage and low water pressure, with possible outages in other areas of Anahola. In addition, the entrance onto Kalalea Rd. from Kūhi‘ō Highway will be closed, and traffic will be detoured to Ioane Rd. Motorists are asked to drive with caution. The scheduled waterline improvements are necessary to service the Pi‘ilani Mai Ke Kai Subdivision, which is part of the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands affordable housing project.
7/22/2008 - Real property taxes are due soon - LĪHU‘E – County officials would like to remind Kaua‘i property owners that the first installment of real property taxes for the 2008-2009 tax year are due Aug. 20. Payments can be made online at www.kauai.gov/paypropertytax, by mail, in person, or at a drop box located outside the Līhu‘e Civic Center, Kāpule Building. Checks should be made payable to the Director of Finance. Real property tax bills were recently mailed to all Kaua‘i property owners or their respective servicing agents.
7/21/2008 - Missing hunter found unharmed - KŌKE‘E – Cody Kimura, the 21-year-old hunter who was missing in Kōke‘e for two days, was found this morning unharmed. He was taken to Kaua‘i Veterans’ Memorial Hospital for observation, and was treated and released. A search team came across Kimura walking down a dirt road at around 9:45 am. He was reported to be cold and dehydrated, but was fine otherwise. Approximately 85 people took part in the organized search including friends and family of Kimura, hunters and hikers familiar with the area, along with personnel from the Kaua‘i Fire Department, Kaua‘i Police Department, and state Department of Land and Natural Resources – Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement, and the Kaua‘i Canine Team.
7/20/2008 - Rescue teams search for missing hunter - KŌKE‘E – A search for a 21-year-old hunter in Kōke‘e began at first light this morning and will continue until dusk or safe weather conditions permit. Cody Kimura of Līhu‘e was reported missing at around 11:20 last night after efforts to find him by his hunting party were unsuccessful. Police officers, law enforcement officers from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources and the Kaua‘i Search and Rescue Team have been searching the Sugi Grove area on foot, while fire fighters and rescue specialists from the Kaua‘i Fire Department are conducting an aerial search on Air-1.
7/19/2008 - Brushfire burns 40 acres in Anahola - ANAHOLA – A brushfire burned about 40 acres in Anahola this afternoon. No one was injured and no homes were threatened. The fire broke out at around 1:45 pm near Kukuihale Rd. below the site of a new Department of Hawaiian Home Lands subdivision. Eleven firefighters from the Kapa‘a, Līhu‘e and Kalāheo stations and Battalion Chief Teddy Williams responded to the call. Air-1 also assisted with putting out the fire. The fire was deemed under control at 3:30 pm.
7/18/2008 - Canoe paddling offered at Hanamā'ulu Beach Park - HANAMĀ'ULU – In the first session of a new canoe paddling program for youth held at Hanamā'ulu Beach Park, participants learned the basics. Where to put their feet, how to get in and out of a canoe, and how to hold their paddles were some of the topics covered Tuesday in the Hanamā'ulu Hui Wa‘a Program. “By the end of this 10-week program, we hope that the students will be proficient at Hawaiian canoe paddling,” said Francis Takasaki, one of the program instructors.
