Injured hiker rescued on Kalalau Trail Wednesday

LĪHU‘E  — Personnel from the Kaua‘i Fire Department rescued an injured Illinois visitor from a quarter mile past Windy Point on the Kalalau Trail on Wednesday, August 20.

According to a preliminary report, first responders received a report of a distressed hiker shortly after 3:45 p.m.

Personnel with Līhu‘e Fire Station aboard Air 2 initially responded to the incident. However, due to weather conditions, Air 2 was unable to conduct a short haul extraction safely. Air 2 then landed at the Kē‘ē Beach landing zone and dropped three personnel to hike in and assist.

First responders with the Hanalei Fire Station arrived on scene and discovered the injured hiker a quarter mile past Windy Point with an apparent ankle injury. Initial first aid was administered on scene. The hiker was then extricated by personnel from Hanalei and Līhu‘e Fire Stations using a stokes litter and wheel, where they were taken to Kē‘ē Beach. Upon arriving at Kē‘ē Beach, the hiker was transferred to American Medical Response for further medical care.

The scene was cleared shortly before 4:15 p.m.
