Road closures for Waimea Light Parade set for Dec. 16

WAIMEA – The annual Waimea Light Parade is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 16, at 6:15 p.m.

The parade will begin at Waimea Canyon Middle School parking, continue to Huakai Road, down Waimea Canyon Drive to Kaumuali‘i Highway, and end at the Alawai Road intersection.

To accommodate the parade, the Kaua‘i Police Department will close off all streets along the parade route. Road closures will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will remain closed until about 9:30 p.m. or until the parade is over.

No parking will be allowed along the parade route.

Due to the road closures, the Kaua‘i Bus Route 200 departing Līhu‘e at 4:25 p.m., 5:25 p.m., 6:25 p.m, and 7:25 p.m. will end in Waimea at the Pāʻulaʻula State Historic Site (formerly known as Russian Fort). Route 100 at 6:15 p.m., 7:15 p.m., 8:15 p.m., and 9:15 p.m. will start in Waimea at the Pāʻulaʻula State Historic Site due to the road closure. The last Route 100 bus will leave Kekaha at 5:15 p.m.For more information about bus services, please call 808-246-8110.

The Kaua‘i Police Department will be stationed at the road closures and reopen streets as the parade clears.

Motorists should allow additional time to get to their destinations as traffic delays are expected.

Please be advised that due to staffing shortage beginning Sunday August 27th, 2023, until further notice, The Kauai Bus will not be operating on Sundays.

Transportation Agency Overview

The Kaua'i Bus operates a Public (Fixed Route) bus service and a Paratransit (Door-to-Door) bus service from Hanalei to Kekaha daily.

Fixed Route Service: (bus stop to bus stop)

5:15 a.m. - 9:45 p.m.
(Monday through Saturday, including most Holidays)

No Sunday Service

Each bus has a destination sign on the front and curb side of the bus, displaying the route number.

Although Drivers follow a predetermined schedule, arrival at bus stops may be affected by traffic, operating conditions and route deviations.

Paratransit Service:
Paratransit service is available for qualified individuals in the categories below. Service days and hours are the same as public transportation. Reservations are required no later than 4:30 PM the day prior for curb-to-curb pickups. Reservations can be made by calling (808)246-8110 menu option #3 or they can be emailed to TheKauaiBus@kauai.gov 

  • Senior: Individuals must be 65 years and older and registered with the County Transportation Agency..
  • ADA: (Americans with Disabilities Act) - Individuals must be certified and registered as ADA eligible for service.

Printed information is available in alternate formats within seven (7) days of a request.

(paratransit routes that go beyond the ADA 3/4 mile corridor will have seats open to the general public on a space available basis.)
