At approximately 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2025, a 2007 Toyota truck was traveling westbound on Kaumuali‘i Highway when a bicyclist, also heading west, veered into the roadway. The front passenger side of the truck struck the bicycle, causing the rider to sustain serious injuries. The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.

The bicyclist, a 79-year-old man from Kekaha, was transported to Wilcox Medical Center in critical condition. The driver of the truck, a 47-year-old man from Kapa‘a, reported no injuries and stayed at the scene to fully cooperate with the investigation.

Kaumuali‘i Highway was closed in both directions for approximately 1.5 hours as officers with the Kauaʻi Police Department’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation. Traffic was diverted to ‘Elepaio Road.
