Bicyclist struck by vehicle on Kūhiō Highway

Dec. 30, 2024 Update: The 44-year-old bicyclist has been identified as Aaron Dorney-Sundquist, of Kapaa. He succumbed to his injuries on Dec. 27, marking the 8th traffic-related fatality on Kaua‘i this year. KAPA‘A – Police responded to a traffic incident Wednesday evening on Kūhiō Highway in Kapa‘a.
At approximately 6:50 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 25, a 2008 Toyota sedan was traveling northbound on Kūhiō Highway when it struck a 44-year-old male bicyclist. The bicyclist was crossing the highway in a marked crosswalk at the intersection of Kūhiō Highway and Kawaihau Road.
The bicyclist was transported to Wilcox Medical Center and later airlifted to Queens Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition. The driver of the Toyota sedan did not report any injuries.
Kūhiō Highway was closed in both directions for approximately 1.5 hours as officers with the Kauaʻi Police Department’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation.
The investigation is ongoing. Speed does not appear to be a factor and toxicology results are pending.
