KŌLOA – The Department of Public Works and Kaikor Construction Group, Inc., held a blessing in Kōloa Wednesday for the Kōloa Road Bridge and Kīpū Bridge Project on Wednesday.
“It’s unique in Hawai‘i to place so much emphasis at the start of a project because we're honoring everyone who came before and created these opportunities to connect people, communities, and towns for today and tomorrow,” said Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami. “I want to thank our team and all the workers on this project, whose safety is the top priority, so they can return to work and continue providing for their families.”
The scope of this $1.9 million project includes spalled concrete repairs to the bridge abutments, piers, and deck, an overlay with a new asphalt surface, and the addition of a guardrail near both ends of the mauka barrier of the bridge, among other repairs. The historical appearance of the Kōloa Bridge will remain the same. The budget of this project is also shared with the repairs of Kīpū Bridge. Work on the Kīpū Bridge will commence after the Kōloa Bridge, and a press release for said work will be provided at a later date.
From March 6 to Nov. 1, Kōloa Road, from Po‘ipū Road to Maluhia Road, will have shifting lane closures on weekdays, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Motorists are advised to make the appropriate arrangements to accommodate the necessary road closures, use alternative routes, drive with caution, and allow extra time to reach their destinations. As a reminder, Kōloa Bridge has a weight limit of 6 tons. Trucks that exceed this limit should find an alternative route to reach their destination to reduce further damage to the bridge.
Dates and times are subject to change depending on weather and other factors. Anyone with questions may contact Stephen Baginski or Roger Mamuad of Kaikor Construction Group, Inc. at 808-841-3110. They may also contact Aidan Smith of the County of Kaua‘i Engineering Division at 808-241-4883.
