Community Encouraged to Participate in October Drug Take Back Day
Published on October 15, 2026
LĪHU‘E – Residents are encouraged to take part in the upcoming Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Kauaʻi Police Department, 3990 Kaʻana Street in Līhuʻe. The event provides a convenient opportunity to safely dispose of medications that are no longer needed.
The Kauaʻi Police Department, in partnership with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), will host a free, anonymous drive-thru medication collection. Participants can drop off unwanted medications without leaving their vehicles, and no questions will be asked.
Accepted items include prescription and non-prescription medications, such as tablets, capsules, liquids, and patches. Vapes and e-cigarette devices will be accepted only after batteries have been removed. Needles and syringes, whether new or used, will not be accepted.
Properly disposing of medications helps reduce the risk of accidental ingestion, misuse, and access by individuals for whom the medications were not prescribed. It also helps prevent improper disposal practices, such as flushing medications or throwing them in household trash, which can contribute to environmental concerns.
Community participation is key to the success of Drug Take Back Day. During the April collection event, Kauaʻi residents safely disposed of 561 pounds of unwanted medications. The public is encouraged to continue this effort at the upcoming October collection.
For those unable to attend, a permanent, anonymous medication drop box is available year-round at the Kauaʻi Police Department in Līhuʻe.
Drug Take Back Day is part of a nationwide initiative led by the DEA to promote the safe disposal of unwanted medications. For more information, visit www.dea.gov/takebackday.
