High school students invited to serve on Boards and Commissions

LĪHU‘E — The County of Kaua‘i Office of Boards and Commissions is inviting high school students to help shape the future of the island by volunteering to serve on County Boards and Commissions.

Students who will be high school juniors or seniors as of August 4, 2025, and are interested in serving are encouraged to apply online at: https://www.kauai.gov/Government/Boards-and-Commissions/Application-for-Board-or-Commission.

Boards and Commissions are composed of community leaders and residents committed to making a difference. They serve as a bridge between the public and County government, allowing members to share ideas and participate in decisions that impact Kaua‘i. Each board or commission has unique responsibilities—for example, the Police Commission is responsible for hiring the Police Chief.

In 2024, Kaua‘i voters approved a Charter amendment allowing junior and senior high school students to become members of County Boards and Commissions, creating new opportunities for youth involvement in local government.

The Office of Boards and Commissions provides support to 17 boards and commissions that oversee various County functions, including:

  1. Arborist Advisory Committee
  2. Board of Ethics
  3. Board of Review
  4. Board of Water Supply
  5. Building Board of Appeals
  6. Charter Review Commission
  7. Civil Service Commission
  8. Committee on the Status of Women
  9. Cost Control Commission
  10. Fire Commission
  11. Elections Accessibility Needs Advisory Committee
  12. Kaua‘i Historic Preservation Review Commission
  13. Liquor Control Commission
  14. Planning Commission
  15. Police Commission
  16. Public Access, Open Space, Natural Resources Preservation Fund Commission
  17. Salary Commission
