LĪHU‘E — Personnel from the Kaua‘i Fire Department rescued a 58-year-old male California visitor from the Kalalau Trail on Thursday, November 27, after he reported being unable to hike out due to alleged heatstroke symptoms.
Personnel with Līhu‘e Fire Station aboard Air 1 responded to the incident shortly after 5:20 p.m. on Thursday.
First responders arrived on scene near the 1.5 mile landing zone and discovered the hiker, who was ambulatory and waiting at the landing zone. The hiker was able to walk unassisted to Air 1, but in accordance with safety procedures, rescuers escorted him into the helicopter, which then transported him to Princeville Airport. Upon landing at the Princeville Airport, the hiker was transferred to Princeville fire station personnel and American Medical Response. The hiker refused further medical care.
The scene was cleared shortly after 6:05 p.m.
