Distressed hiker rescued on Kukui Trail Sunday

LĪHU‘E  — Personnel from the Kaua‘i Fire Department rescued a 46-year-old male California visitor from the Kukui Trail in Kōke‘e on Sunday, December 7, after he reported being unable to hike out due to alleged leg injuries.

Personnel with Līhu‘e Fire Station aboard Air 1 responded to the incident shortly after 3:50 p.m. on Sunday.

First responders arrived on scene approximately 1.2 miles into the trail and discovered the hiker. Līhu‘e Fire Station personnel aboard Air 1 extracted the hiker using an aerial rescue vest, transporting the hiker to the Kukui Trail landing zone in Kōke‘e. Upon landing at the Kukui Trail landing zone, the hiker was transferred to Waimea fire station personnel and American Medical Response for assessment. The hiker refused further medical care and was released.

The scene was cleared shortly after 6:05 p.m.
