LĪHUʻE – Kaua‘i Fire Department firefighters extinguished a fire in Wainiha Thursday, August 20.
No injuries were reported.
Firefighters were dispatched to a report of a brush fire in Wainiha in the vicinity of Ananalu Road and Anahulu Road shortly before 1:25 p.m. on Thursday.
Personnel with the Hanalei fire station, Kaiākea fire station, Kapaʻa fire station, Līhuʻe fire station, Tender 3, Engine 2, Air 1, Air 2, Air 3, and the Kaua‘i Police Department are responding to this incident. American Medical Response staged nearby as a precaution.
According to a preliminary report, approximately 100 acres were burned by a brush fire in Wainiha on Thursday. When firefighters arrived, they were unable to access the fire from the top of Anahulu and instead approached from the corner of Anahulu and Ananalu. Crews connected to a nearby fire hydrant and ran hoses up the hillside toward the ridge to reach the fire.
The fire was moving mauka along the ridge, and firefighters had limited visibility of the fire’s leading edge. Air 1 provided an aerial view to help assess the fire’s size and location. Additional firefighters arrived and protected nearby structures while crews worked to keep the fire from spreading toward additional structures farther down the hillside.
Helicopter water drops were also used to help slow the fire and put out areas that were difficult to access from the ground. Firefighters remained on scene, checking the area and putting out remaining hot spots before clearing the scene shortly after 7:15 p.m.
Kaua‘i Fire Department personnel remained in the area overnight to monitor for any signs of fire activity. Nothing was observed during the overnight watch.
Personnel with the Hanalei Fire Station returned Friday, August 21, for a final check and determined that the fire is completely extinguished, with no remaining threat or risk of the fire reigniting.
