Firefighters extinguish structure fire in Waimea Thursday

WAIMEA – Kaua‘i Fire Department firefighters extinguished a structure fire in Waimea on Thursday, May 21.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters were dispatched to a report of a structure fire on Waimea Road shortly before 5:40 p.m. on Thursday.

Personnel with the Waimea Fire Station, Hanapēpē Fire Station, Kalāheo Fire Station, Kōloa Fire Station, Līhu‘e Fire Station, and the on-duty Battalion Chief responded to the incident.

According to a preliminary report, upon arrival shortly before 5:45 p.m., firefighters discovered a one-story vacant residential structure heavily engulfed in flames. Firefighters worked quickly to contain the fire and protect nearby buildings, including neighboring businesses threatened by the flames and smoke.

Firefighters worked from multiple sides of the property to ensure the fire had not spread to surrounding structures. Crews extinguished small spot fires, cleared smoke from nearby businesses, and checked walls and exterior areas for hidden hot spots before bringing the incident under control.

The fire was brought under control shortly after 6 p.m. Firefighters remained on scene conducting overhaul and mop-up operations before clearing the scene.

Firefighters cleared the scene shortly after 9:45 p.m. on Thursday.

Damages to the structure and contents are estimated at $200,000.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
