WAIMEA – Firefighters extinguished a storage shed that caught fire Sunday afternoon at a residence in Waimea.
No injuries were reported.
Waimea and Hanapēpē firefighters responded to a home on Nima Place in Waimea shortly after 2 p.m., after it was reported that a storage shed was on fire.
When firefighters arrived on scene they found a 10-foot by 20-foot structure, separate from the main residence, with smoke coming out through the windows. Prior to their arrival, bystanders had used a fire extinguisher and water from two garden hoses to slow the fire spread.
Firefighters took over the incident and used tank water to knock down the fire through the windows before entering the shed, where they fully extinguished the remaining fire and hot spots.
Fire inspectors from the Kaua‘i Fire Prevention Bureau arrived on scene and estimated damages to the shed and its contents to be approximately $22,500.
The cause of the fire was deemed accidental due to an equipment malfunction.
The scene was cleared at approximately 3:30 p.m.
