The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Warning for north- and east-facing shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau currently in effect through 6 p.m. Tuesday, February 24. The warning may be extended, dropped, or modified as conditions develop.

According to the NWS, a long period north-northeast swell will build on Monday and peak Monday night and Tuesday. This large swell will produce much larger than normal surf across some coastlines, especially in windward areas. The swell will gradually decline Tuesday night through Friday. Surf heights along north-facing are projected to reach 10 to 16 feet Monday and peaking at 18 to 25 feet Monday night and Tuesday. Surf heights along east-facing are projected to reach 7 to 10 feet Monday and peaking at 12 to 16 feet Monday night and Tuesday.

Entering the water in these areas during the High Surf Warning is very hazardous and could cause serious injury or death. Beachgoers are also advised to use extreme caution, as large breaking waves could make it dangerous for those standing along the shoreline.
