WAILUA — Personnel with the Kauaʻi Fire Department assisted an injured 33-year-old male visitor on the ʻUluwehi Falls Trail, commonly known as Secret Falls, on Saturday, Jan. 31.

According to a preliminary report, the incident was first reported to Kauaʻi Police Dispatch at approximately 11:40 a.m.

Crews from the Kapaʻa and Līhuʻe Fire Stations, Good Samaritans, and American Medical Response responded to the incident.

Fire crews arrived on scene shortly after 11:55 a.m. and accessed the area via the Kamokila Village parking area. Responders were initially advised that a male had jumped into the water at the falls and struck his head on a rock. Upon arrival, firefighters found the individual walking along the trail, accompanied by several bystanders. Two Good Samaritans with medical experience had already applied a wrap to the patient’s head to control bleeding.

Firefighters continued to assess and monitor the patient as they escorted him out of the trail. American Medical Response personnel arrived at the parking area as crews exited the trail. AMR personnel continued advanced medical treatment on the individual before transporting him to Wilcox Medical Center for further evaluation.

The scene was cleared at approximately 12:45 p.m.

The County of Kauaʻi reminds residents and visitors to use caution when hiking and swimming in natural areas. Trails and waterfalls can present hazardous conditions, including slippery rocks, even during fair weather.
