Hāʻena – The Kaua‘i Fire Department (KFD) rescued an injured 66-year-old female visitor Monday afternoon from Hanakāpīʻai Beach.
According to a preliminary report, KFD received a report at approximately 1:05 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 22, of an injured female hiker near the Hanakāpīʻai stream crossing. Responding units included the Hanale Fire Station, Rescue 3 aboard Air 1, and American Medical Response.
Upon arrival, firefighters determined the hiker had sustained an apparent leg injury after a fall and was unable to hike out. Due to the remote terrain and the nature of the injury, Air 1 conducted a helicopter rescue operation. A rescuer was inserted near the patient, who was assessed, treated, and secured for transport.
The patient was airlifted from the Hanakāpīʻai landing zone to Princeville Airport, where care was transferred to awaiting emergency medical personnel for ground transport to a medical facility.
The scene was cleared by approximately 3:10 p.m.
Kaua‘i Fire Department reminds residents and visitors that trails along the Nā Pali Coast can be hazardous, especially during wet conditions. Hikers are urged to check weather and stream conditions, wear appropriate footwear, and turn back if conditions become unsafe.
