Injured hiker rescued from Waipo‘o Falls Trail Saturday

KŌKE‘E — Personnel from the Kaua‘i Fire Department rescued a 32-year-old female California visitor who injured her ankle while hiking Waipo‘o Falls Trail in Kōke‘e on Saturday, Aug. 2.

According to a preliminary report, first responders received a call of an injured hiker shortly after 1:20 p.m.

Firefighters from the Waimea fire station responded to the scene. Upon arrival, crews hiked approximately a quarter mile along Waipo‘o Falls Trail and located the hiker, who was alert and responsive but unable to walk due to an injured ankle.

Firefighters stabilized the injury with a splint and used a litter and wheel to carry the patient off the trail. The hiker was transported to the Pu‘u Hina Hina parking lot, where American Medical Response personnel evaluated her. She was then taken to Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital by private vehicle.

The scene was cleared at approximately 3:55 p.m.
