Injured hiker rescued on Awawapuhi Trail Monday

KŌKE‘E — Kaua‘i Fire Department firefighters rescued a 51-year-old female visitor from Illinois on the Awawapuhi Trail in Kōke‘e on Monday, Jan. 6.

First responders received a report of a hiker with an apparent leg injury on the Awawapuhi Trail shortly after 11:50 a.m. on Monday.

Personnel with the Waimea Fire Station and Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 responded to the incident.

According to a preliminary report, Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 was deployed. However, due to heavy cloud coverage, Air 1 could not access the Kōke‘e area. Instead, Rescue 3 personnel and Waimea firefighters hiked the trail, arrived on the scene, and discovered the injured hiker at approximately 1:40 p.m.

First responders carried the injured hiker to the trailing parking lot and arrived at approximately 4:15 p.m. American Medical Response personnel continued medical treatment on the hiker before transporting her to Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital.

The scene was cleared at approximately 4:30 p.m.
