KŌKE‘E — Personnel from the Kaua‘i Fire Department rescued an injured 60-year-old resident from Ditch Trail off Camp 10 Road, also known as the Sugi Grove campsite, in Kōke‘e State Park on Monday, April 8.

Waimea Fire Station personnel and American Medical Response responded to the incident.

First responders received a report of a distressed hiker shortly after 5:25 p.m.

Truck 7 arrived on the scene and found a hiker with an apparent ankle injury approximately a half mile into Ditch Trail. Firefighters treated the patient with splints before loading her into a SKED for initial extraction down the steep and muddy slope. Once able, firefighters used an Aztek device to safely haul the SKED along the trail. Due to the challenging terrain, a combination of specialized equipment was used to ensure a safe extraction.

Truck 7 personnel successfully brought the patient to the trailhead, where she opted to go to the emergency room via personal vehicle.

The scene was cleared shortly after 9:35 p.m.
