LĪHU‘E – The Kaua‘i Bus announced on Monday the launch of a new digital fare payment system powered by Masabi, the company delivering Fare Payments-as-a-Service through its open Justride platform.
Through the new Kaua‘i Bus app, riders can now purchase single-ride tickets, day passes, monthly passes, and annual passes directly from their devices at any time. Additionally, riders also have the option to manage their Stored Value Accounts (SVA) through either the app or an online portal, making it easy to add funds and purchase fares at their convenience. Masabi also provides onboard ticket validators which have been installed across the Kaua‘i Bus fleet, ensuring seamless boarding, reduced dwell times, and enhancing the overall transit experience.
“Our team has always sought ways to modernize antiquated government processes, and this new development from the Kaua‘i Bus does exactly that,” said Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami. “This new mobile ticketing app makes it easier than ever for residents and visitors to ride the Kaua‘i Bus.”
“Bringing convenience and efficiency to our riders has always been a top priority of our Mayor and his administration,” said Transportation Agency Executive Celia Mahikoa. “This new mobile ticketing system is a first step forward in transforming the way we provide an accessible and reliable service to riders. Whether you're commuting to work, running errands, or exploring Kaua‘i, everyone can now enjoy a faster, more modern way to travel.”
The partnership with Masabi, the world’s largest mobile ticketing provider, is the first part of a phased approach to modernizing fare payments across The Kaua'i Bus’ network. Future plans include the introduction of Account-Based Ticketing (ABT) and Open Payments, enabling riders to benefit from fare capping for more equitable pricing and the flexibility to pay using smartcards, contactless bank cards, or mobile wallets. These advancements aim to simplify payments, enhance accessibility, and ensure riders always pay the best fare for their journeys.
“Mobile ticketing is a cornerstone of modernizing public transit and creating a better rider experience,” said Brian Zanghi, CEO of Masabi. “We are thrilled to collaborate with the County of Kaua‘i to bring this innovative solution to the island’s transit system. Together, we are not only improving the travel experience for passengers but also helping to build a more efficient and sustainable public transportation network.”
