HANAMĀʻULU – Kauaʻi Fire Department firefighters extinguished a 50-by-50-foot brush fire near Hanamāʻulu Beach Park early Saturday morning, July 4.
No injuries were reported, and no structures were threatened.
Firefighters were dispatched to a report of a brush fire in the vicinity of Hehi Road in Hanamāʻulu on Saturday shortly before 2:40 a.m.
Personnel with the Līhuʻe and Kōloa fire stations, Tanker 3, Rescue 3, the on-duty Battalion Chief, Airport Rescue and Fire Fighters from Līhuʻe Airport, and the Kauaʻi Police Department responded to the incident.
According to a preliminary report, upon arrival shortly after 2:40 a.m., firefighters discovered a fire burning near the old Hanamāʻulu Bridge, below Kapule Highway. Crews worked from the highway above, using hose lines, an aerial master stream, and water shuttled by tanker to control and extinguish the fire.
During the incident, the Kauaʻi Police Department closed Kapule Highway in both directions for public safety. The highway has since reopened.
The cause of the fire is undetermined.
Firefighters cleared the scene shortly before 4:45 a.m.
