Kaua‘i Fire Department urges fire safety this Fourth of July
Published on June 18, 2025
LĪHUʻE – As the Fourth of July approaches, the Kaua‘i Fire Department is reminding the public to celebrate safely and responsibly when using fireworks.
Consumer fireworks are allowed only on July 4 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Fireworks may only be ignited on private property during this time. The use of fireworks on public property, including streets, sidewalks, and parks, is illegal. Removing the powder or pyrotechnic contents from any fireworks is strictly prohibited.
The Kaua‘i Fire Department urges everyone to follow these fire safety tips:
-
Aerials and illegal fireworks are dangerous and against the law.
-
Don’t use fireworks during high wind or dry conditions — brushfires can spark fast.
-
Supervise keiki closely around all fireworks, including sparklers.
-
Have a hose or water bucket ready to douse any unexpected fires.
-
Clean up your area — leave no trace in our communities or on our beaches.
Let’s mālama our community and protect our homes and neighborhoods this holiday.
To purchase firecrackers, a valid permit is required. Firecracker permit applications are available now through July 3, 2025. Permits can be obtained online at https://connect.kauai.gov or in person at the Kaua‘i Fire Department Headquarters, located at 4444 Rice Street, Suite 315, in Līhuʻe. Office hours are Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., excluding holidays.
To apply online, visit the Connect Kaua‘i portal, click on the “Kaua‘i Fire Department” icon, and select “Firecracker Permit.” A smartphone or tablet is recommended to assist with uploading a valid photo ID. Once approved, the permit will be emailed to the applicant. All permits must be printed and validated in person at the Fire Department Headquarters.
For individuals needing assistance with creating a Connect Kaua‘i account or printing their permit, Fire Department staff are available to help in person. Payments may be made online through the Connect Kaua‘i portal or in person using cash or check. Checks should be made payable to the Director of Finance. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
Please note: Firecracker permits are required only for firecrackers. No permit is needed to purchase other consumer fireworks such as snakes, sparklers, fountains, whistles, toy smoke devices, wheels, ground spinners, and other similar items.
