Kaumumene Trail in Princeville reopens following rehabilitation

PRINCEVILLE – The Kaumumene Trail, also known as Hideaways Trail, in Princeville has reopened to the public following the completion of a rehabilitation project by the County of Kauaʻi Department of Public Works.

The project began June 29 to restore safe public access, address existing hazards, improve drainage, reduce erosion, and extend the trail’s service life. Work included vegetation management, trail reconstruction, installation and repair of safety features, and removal of hazardous conditions.

Construction was initially expected to take about eight weeks, but weather delays and Hurricane Lowell extended the schedule. Work was completed on Thursday, Sept. 24.

The Department of Public Works thanks the Planning Department for its guidance throughout the project and Sustainable Engineering, LLC, for its quality workmanship and commitment to completing the trail improvements. The department also thanks 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay for providing access, parking, and other resources that supported the work.

Because of the trail’s popularity, people repeatedly tried to enter the construction area despite posted closure signs and barricades. ABA Protection, Inc. provided security services throughout the project to educate the public, protect the work area, and prevent unauthorized access.

The County also recognizes community member Mike Lyons for his longstanding advocacy and support of the Kaumumene Trail. The cooperation and contributions of all partners were key to completing the project and safely reopening the trail.
