LĪHU‘E – Police responded to a traffic incident this morning at the intersection of Kūhiō Highway and Kuamoʻo Road.
At approximately 5:50 a.m., a 38-year-old man from Hanapēpē was operating a 2003 Jeep sport utility vehicle northbound on Kūhiō Highway and preparing to turn left onto Kūamo‘o Road. At that time, a 42-year-old man from Kapa‘a was traveling southbound on Kūhiō Highway on an electric motorcycle. As the Jeep attempted to make the left turn, the vehicle struck the side of the motorcycle, ejecting the rider onto the roadway. According to preliminary reports, the operator of the motorcycle was not wearing a helmet.
The operator of the motorcycle sustained serious injuries and was transported by medics to Wilcox Medical Center before being transferred to The Queen’s Medical Center on O‘ahu for further treatment. The driver of the Jeep did not report any injuries.
Kūhiō Highway at Kūamo‘o Road was closed in both directions for approximately two hours while Kaua‘i Police Department’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation.
