LĪHU‘E – The Public Works Solid Waste Division is announcing the reopening of the Līhu‘e Refuse Transfer Station (RTS) on Saturday, Nov. 2. The station has been closed since Sept. 11, 2024, to accommodate renovations to address water quality standards and stormwater discharges.

The Kapa‘a RTS will be closing for renovations on Nov. 2, 2024, for an estimated 9 months. However, bagged trash will be available for drop off at the Kapa‘a Roads Baseyard on Kahau Road on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. A news release with more details about the Kapa‘a Baseyard collection will be made available soon.

Due to the anticipated influx of waste into the Līhu‘e RTS, and the fact that construction is still ongoing to assure the safety of equipment and crew, the list of materials accepted at Līhu‘e is temporarily modified.

  • Construction and Demolition (C&D) Debris will not be accepted. Examples include: dry wall, wood waste, tile, roofing material, fiberglass shower stalls and tubs, plumbing pipes, and carpet rolls.
  • Pallets must be cut in quarters.
  • Trailers containing trash will also not be accepted.

It is recommended that all trash be bagged to prevent windblown litter and that long items be cut into 3-foot lengths.

Items not accepted can be hauled by a waste hauler or transported to the Kekaha Landfill.

Please call 808-241-4841 or email solidwaste@kauai.gov with any questions.
