PO‘IPŪ – Kaua‘i Police report that a male visitor was pronounced dead after being pulled from waters off Po‘ipū Beach on Thursday.
The visitor has been identified as Ramon Manalo, age 66, of California.
According to a preliminary report, Ocean Safety Bureau personnel from the Nukumoi Tower spotted bystanders calling for help after bringing to shore an unresponsive bodyboarder from the water near Marriott Waiohai Beach Club at noon. Once on scene, lifeguards began to administer CPR on the man.
When firefighters from the Kōloa fire station arrived on the scene, they continued CPR efforts on the man before personnel from American Medical Response took over operations. AMR personnel continued medical treatment on the California visitor while on transport to Wilcox Medical Center. However, the man could not be revived, and he was pronounced dead by a medical doctor at Wilcox Medical Center.
An autopsy is pending.
Volunteers with the Visitor Aloha Society of Kaua‘i (VASK), a nonprofit providing emergency needs for visitors, and Life’s Bridges, a grief counseling service, are assisting the visitor’s family.
