KĪLAUEA – A man died after being pulled from waters at Kalihiwai Beach yesterday morning.
On Monday, Apr. 7, 2025, at approximately 7:30 a.m., first responders were dispatched to Kalihiwai Beach for an unresponsive swimmer. Bystanders initiated CPR on the victim. Ocean Safety Bureau and American Medical Response personnel arrived shortly after and took over advanced life-saving efforts. The victim was transported to Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The victim has been identified as Peter Koorenhof, a 74-year-old man from Kīlauea.
An autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death, but foul play is not suspected.
Although a High Surf Advisory for Kaua‘i’s north-facing shores expired this morning, hazardous surf conditions persist. Officials continue to advise against swimming or ocean activities along these shores due to strong rip currents and dangerous wave conditions.
