Moped driver injured in single-vehicle crash on Thursday

PO‘IPŪ – Kaua‘i police responded to a single-vehicle moped crash Thursday morning on Kiahuna Plantation Drive in Po‘ipū, which resulted in critical injuries to the operator.

The crash occurred shortly before 10 a.m. when a 54-year-old Po‘ipū man operating a moped was heading east on Kiahuna Plantation Drive and apparently lost control. Firefighters from the Kōloa fire station and AMR medics arrived on scene and treated the man before transporting him to Wilcox Medical Center. He was later medevaced to O‘ahu for further treatment, where he remains in critical condition.

According to police, the man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Speed does not appear to be a contributing factor at this time, and toxicology results are pending.

One lane of Kiahuna Plantation Drive was closed for approximately 2 hours while the Kaua‘i Police Department’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation.

The investigation of the crash remains ongoing.
