NFL brothers host football camp for Kaua‘i youth

LĪHUʻE – Brothers Nate and Nick Herbig of the Pittsburgh Steelers were given a warm welcome home on Saturday by over 600 participants at The HerbieGives All Position Football Camp 2024. Held at the Vidihna Stadium, the free workshop invited young athletes ages 8 through 17 to gain a competitive edge by training under NFL players and professional coaches.
Don Stewart, a coach at the camp and Nate's former roommate from Stanford University, confessed that this has been a lifelong aspiration for the siblings. “We’ve been talking about this since we were freshmen, talked about coming down here one day to do a camp to teach kids and give back, that’s always been the dream,” said Coach Stewart. The Herbig brothers hope to make the camp an annual opportunity for kids across the state to hone their skills and receive one-on-one coaching from professional athletes and top coaches.
K-PAL was proud to be one of the many supporters involved in helping bring that vision to life on Saturday. As Kaua‘i natives, both brothers participated in the Kaua‘i Police Activities League (K-PAL) flag football program growing up. Last year, K-PAL engaged over 1,100 youth through its flag football, boxing and wrestling programs.
“Our main goal is to empower young individuals with the necessary tools to make wise choices in life. We strive to provide them with the guidance and support they need to unlock their true potential, encouraging them to aim high and pursue their dreams relentlessly,” said Sergeant Morris Unutoa, who currently oversees the K-PAL program. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see something like this come full circle, especially the way that Nate and Nick are making valuable investments in the lives of Kaua‘i’s youth.”
As the camp came to a close, Nick Herbig revealed the secret to his extraordinary achievements to the group of young athletes. “Keep God first, family second, everything else comes after that. If you do those two things everything will work out for you, I promise. This game is bigger than football, it’s the game of life. I encourage you guys to attack it every day, one foot in front of the other. Don’t give up, I promise you your dreams are going to come true, just keep on working hard,” said the 22-year-old Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker.
