New fire weather signs installed at Hanapēpē and Waimea fire stations

The Kauaʻi Emergency Management Agency, in partnership with the Kauaʻi Fire Department and the Department of Public Works, has installed new fire weather signs at the Hanapēpē and Waimea fire stations to help residents and visitors stay aware of wildfire conditions and the year-round risk of wildfires on Kauaʻi.

“These signs are a simple but powerful reminder that wildfires are a year-round threat here on Kauaʻi,” said KEMA Administrator Elton Ushio. “By making fire weather awareness more visible in our communities, we hope residents and visitors will stay alert, stay prepared, and take the everyday steps that help keep our island safe.”

When the National Weather Service issues a Red Flag Warning, a Red Flag Warning placard will be displayed on the sign to alert the public. A Red Flag Warning means critical fire weather conditions are either occurring or will occur shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and dry fuels can contribute to extreme fire behavior, and any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.

“Wildfire preparedness starts with awareness,” said KFD Fire Chief Michael Gibson. “When people understand the conditions that lead to wildfires, like using caution with open flames and equipment and reporting fires quickly, they can make a real difference in protecting lives, homes, and our natural resources.” 

When a Red Flag Warning is in effect, the Kauaʻi Fire Department advises the public to take the following precautions to prevent wildfires:

  • Refrain from ALL outdoor burning, including cooking;
  • Avoid the use of mechanized equipment outdoors, including the use of yardwork equipment;
  • Do not drive your vehicle in dry, tall grass. The underside of your vehicle is hot and can easily ignite grasses from your exhaust muffler;
  • Ensure trailer chains do not drag on the ground;
  • Be aware of wind direction and gusts that could spread fire rapidly;
  • Have an escape route to a clear area safe from rapid-fire spread; and
  • Report any possible fires – including signs of smoke or flames – by calling Kauaʻi Police Department Dispatch at 808-241-1711 or 911 if it is an emergency.

Under Hawaii law, anyone who intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly starts a fire that damages another person’s property during a Red Flag Warning may face enhanced criminal penalties, including prosecution for a Class C felony. A Class C Felony is punishable by up to 5 years in priso
