KEKAHA – The County of Kaua‘i Department of Public Works Solid Waste Division, along with project consultant Tetra Tech, invites the community and Westside residents to attend an informational open house on the proposed Kekaha Landfill Cell 3 Vertical Expansion project on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Kekaha Neighborhood Center, located at 8130 Elepaio Road.

The open house will give the community and Westside residents an update on the County’s landfill capacity challenges, long-term plans for waste disposal on Kaua‘i, and to provide advance notice regarding the Cell 3 Vertical Expansion Hawai‘i Environmental Policy Act (HEPA) review process prior to publication of the Environmental Impact Statement Preparation Notice (EISPN).

The Kekaha Landfill is Kaua‘i’s only permitted landfill and is expected to reach capacity around 2030. While the County continues planning for a future landfill at Ma‘alo, the proposed Cell 3 Vertical Expansion project is necessary to bridge the gap in landfill capacity and ensure uninterrupted disposal services for the island.

The proposed project would expand landfill capacity upward within the existing landfill area. No expansion outside the current landfill footprint is being proposed.

The open house will allow attendees to review information, speak with County staff and project representatives, ask questions, and provide feedback. Food and refreshments will be provided.

For questions regarding the open house, or to submit a question in advance, please call 808-241-4879 or visit www.kauai.gov/Cell-3Expansion.

The public is also invited to share comments and concerns as part of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) review process for the project.

Comments may be submitted to Kayla Yost at Tetra Tech, 737 Bishop Street, Suite 2000, Honolulu, Hawai‘i 96813, or by email at kayla.yost@tetratech.com.

Anyone who would like to receive an electronic copy of the Environmental Impact Statement Preparation Notice (EISPN), expected to be published on June 8, 2026, or who would like to participate in the project’s Cultural Impact Assessment process, may also contact Kayla Yost by email.

If you need an ASL interpreter, materials in an alternate format, auxiliary aid support, or an interpreter for a language other than English, please contact Erica Byers at or 808-241-4879 as soon as possible. Requests made as early as possible will allow adequate time to fulfill your request. Upon request, this notice is available in alternate formats such as large print, Braille, or electronic copy.
