LĪHU‘E – A pedestrian sustained serious injuries following a collision on Kūhiō Highway Friday night.

On June 19, 2026, at approximately 10:45 p.m., officers responded to a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian on Kūhiō Highway near the Laukona Street intersection.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a 58-year-old Hanamāʻulu man was walking westbound along the eastbound shoulder of Kūhiō Highway. He then attempted to cross the roadway and was struck by a 2008 Toyota van driven by a 77-year-old Kapaʻa man.

The pedestrian was transported to Wilcox Medical Center in critical but stable condition. Due to the extent of his injuries, he was later transferred to The Queen’s Medical Center on Oʻahu for further treatment.

Speed does not appear to be a contributing factor in the crash. Toxicology results are pending, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Kūhiō Highway was closed for approximately two and a half hours while officers conducted an on-scene investigation. Traffic was diverted through nearby residential streets during the closure.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is urged to call Officer Russell Himongala at (808) 241-1617. Those wishing to remain anonymous can provide information by calling Crime Stoppers Kauaʻi at (808) 246-8300, submitting a tip at crimestopperskauai.org, or through the Crime Stoppers Kauaʻi P3 Tips Mobile App.
