KAPA‘A – Firefighters extinguished a storage shed that caught fire early Wednesday morning at the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex in Kapa‘a.
No injuries were reported.
Shortly after 3:30 a.m., Kaiākea firefighters were dispatched to the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex after receiving a report of a fire at the park. Once on scene, responders found a 10-foot by 30-foot shed fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters with Engine 8 accessed the park from Cane Haul Road (Kapa‘a Bypass), while Truck 8 gained access from Kahau Road. A water supply was established, and firefighters formed attack lines to quickly knock down and fully extinguish the fire.
Fire inspectors with the Fire Prevention Bureau arrived on scene to conduct an investigation. The shed belonged to the Kaua‘i Pop Warner Football League and was used to store youth football equipment. The structure is considered a total loss, and inspectors estimate the damage to the storage shed and its contents to be roughly $200,000.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Kaua‘i Police Department.
Acting Captain of the Investigative Services Bureau Kennison Nagahisa stated, “We are deeply saddened by the destruction caused by the fire at the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex, which resulted in the loss of the storage shed and youth football equipment belonging to the Kaua‘i Pop Warner Football League. We are actively investigating the cause of the fire and urge anyone with information to come forward and assist us in our efforts.”
