LĪHU‘E – The Public Works Solid Waste Division is announcing that delays with home refuse collections are anticipated through early 2025.

The delays are due to longer haul times of residential trash to the Kekaha Landfill. With the Kapa‘a Refuse Transfer Station (RTS) renovation in progress and the Līhu‘e RTS still under construction, individual trash trucks must offload at the landfill instead of the refuse transfer stations.

“Although refuse pick-up could be delayed or occur at different times than usual, residential refuse collections will take place on the regularly scheduled days. Customers are advised to leave their trash out,” said Solid Waste Division Chief Allison Fraley. “We thank the public for their understanding and cooperation.”

Customers must set their trash out the night before or by 4:30 a.m. to ensure refuse is collected. If you do not set out your trash during this period, you will be asked to bring your refuse to the nearest refuse transfer station for disposal.

Officials also advise the following:

  • The cart cannot be overflowing;  lid must be fully closed before pick up.
  • Trash should only be placed in your assigned refuse cart.
  • Only trash inside the cart will be picked up.
  • All trash must be bagged before being placed in refuse carts.
  • Only dry trash should be placed in refuse carts. Liquids must be drained or absorbed before placing in carts.
  • Carts must be placed at least 5 feet away from any object with at least 16 feet of clearance above.
  • When carts are placed in a row, on cul-de-sacs, for example, carts must be 3 feet apart.
  • Refuse carts should be removed from the curbside as soon as possible after the collection is completed.

If your trash has not been picked up at the end of the day, please call 808-241-4841 or email solidwaste@kauai.gov.
