Scoping meeting scheduled June 24 for Kekaha Landfill Cell 3
Published on June 15, 2026
KEKAHA – The County of Kaua‘i Department of Public Works Solid Waste Division invites the community to take part in a public scoping meeting for the proposed Kekaha Landfill Cell 3 Vertical Expansion project on June 24, 2026, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Kekaha Neighborhood Center, located at 8130 Elepaio Road.
This meeting is part of the public comment period for the Environmental Impact Statement Preparation Notice (EISPN), an early step in the environmental review process that describes the proposed project and helps identify the issues and impacts to be studied in the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
Members of the public will have an opportunity to comment on the project. Comments may be submitted in writing or provided orally and recorded individually to ensure accurate documentation in the environmental review record.
All comments received at the meeting, as well as those submitted during the public comment period, will be considered during the environmental review process and help inform the scope of the Draft EIS.
The Kekaha Landfill is currently projected to reach capacity in 2030. Without additional permitted airspace, Kaua‘i would be left without a landfill for municipal solid waste disposal. The proposed vertical expansion would extend the landfill’s operational life by up to 10 years by increasing disposal capacity within the existing landfill footprint.
The project would help ensure the County can continue to provide safe and reliable waste disposal services while efforts to develop a new long-term landfill facility move forward.
The EISPN for the Kekaha Landfill Cell 3 Vertical Expansion Project was published in the June 8, 2026, edition of the State Office of Planning and Sustainable Development’s Environmental Notice. The publication initiated a 30-day public comment period.
During this period, agencies, organizations, and individuals may submit written comments on the project and the scope of the EIS. Please see the County’s webpage at www.kauai.gov/Cell-3Expansion to learn about the project and to comment.
