Section 8 housing assistance payments to landlords may be delayed

LĪHUʻE – The County of Kauaʻi Housing Agency is advising landlords that Section 8 Housing Assistance Payments (HAP) may be delayed due to the effects of Hurricane Lowell and damage to County infrastructure from the Sept. 9 fire at the Kapule Building at the Līhuʻe Civic Center.

Timely payment to all program landlords remains a priority for the agency, and payments will be distributed as quickly as possible. County staff are working to return all County operations to normal as soon as possible.

Under the HAP contract and federal regulations, Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program participants are not responsible for the housing authority’s portion of rent. Participants cannot be evicted or penalized for payment delays caused by the storm and fire-related disruptions.

Program participants are reminded that they must continue to pay their tenant portion of rent as required by their HAP contract and lease agreement.
