Sept. 9, 12:45 p.m., UPDATE, County of Kaua’i, Solid Waste Division
Published on September 09, 2026
The following updates are from the County of Kaua’i Solid Waste Division.
The Kekaha landfill and Hanapēpē refuse transfer station are open today, Sept. 9, and accepting customers.
Līhu’e and Kapa’a RTSs are currently closed due to downed wires.
We expect to reopen these facilities tomorrow, Sept. 10, if conditions allow.
Green waste is being accepted at Līhu’e and Kapa’a until capacity is reached. We are working to obtain additional green waste hauling services to keep up with the flow of materials.
Hanalei RTS remains without power, and refuse collection services are suspended due to downed and low-hanging wires throughout the island. If we are able to provide trash collection services later this week, we will. Please leave your trash carts out and accessible.
Our recycling contractor is also without power and cannot currently service Kauai Recycles bins or process HI-5 materials. Services will resume once power is restored.
Please help us manage the post-storm waste. Separate your waste into putrescible (food and other materials that can spoil) and dry waste. Please prioritize disposal of putrescible waste first to help reduce odors, pests, and other impacts while collection services are disrupted.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we work to safely restore services following Hurricane Lowell. We will continue to provide updates as services evolve.
