Traffic crash in Lāwaʻi closes Kaumualiʻi Highway

LĀWAʻI – A traffic incident that occurred shortly before 7 a.m. on Thursday resulted in the closure of Kaumualiʻi Highway near Piko Road Intersection.

At approximately 6:50 a.m., a compact SUV with a single occupant veered off Kaumualiʻi Highway and struck a utility pole. The utility pole fell and struck another passing vehicle. Police and medics responded to the scene and the driver of the SUV was transported to Wilcox Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The incident has resulted in an extended closure of the highway while crews work to restore service to the area.

Westbound traffic is being rerouted through ʻŌmaʻo Road to Kōloa Road and eastbound traffic is being redirected through Piko Road to Kōloa Road.

Repairs are still ongoing and it may be several hours before the Kaumualiʻi Highway is completely reopened.

The crash remains under police investigation.
