Two-Vehicle Collision Shuts Down Kūhiō Highway in Kīlauea

KĪLAUEA – A two-vehicle traffic collision Sunday morning resulted in multiple injuries.
On Sunday, July 20, 2025, at approximately 7:45 a.m., first responders were dispatched to a two-vehicle crash on Kūhiō Highway near Hoʻokui Road in Kīlauea. The incident involved a white 2022 Honda multipurpose vehicle and a blue 2025 Mazda multipurpose vehicle.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the Honda, driven by a 64-year-old man from Anahola, was traveling northbound on Kūhiō Highway when the vehicle crossed the center line and struck a southbound Mazda carrying three occupants from Washington State.
The driver of the Honda was transported to Wilcox Medical Center in critical condition. The driver of the Mazda, a 72-year-old man, and one of the passengers, a 69-year-old woman, were treated at Wilcox Medical Center and later released. A second 69-year-old female passenger was medevaced to Straub Medical Center on Oʻahu for further treatment.
Speed appears to be a contributing factor in the crash, and toxicology results are pending. The investigation remains ongoing.
Traffic was diverted onto Kolo Road for approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes while the Kauaʻi Police Department’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation.
